The was my plan yesterday, and then my roommate's girlfriend e-mailed me and asked what we were doing for his birthday... which is today. Yikes! So thanks to Anne I didn't allow Hans's birthday to go unnoticed. That would have been unspeakably lame.
It turned out we were able to do a nice little birthday surprise. You see, Hans works the late shift this week, so he gets off work at midnight. Anne and I decided we would throw him a little birthday dinner surprise when he got back from work. I made a cheesecake (my first) and I helped Anne pick out a good recipe for a late night dinner, a cheese-spinach lasagna with pine nuts.
After midnight Hans called Anne's mobile and talked with her while driving home. Anne led him to believe she was at her apartment. That allowed us to judge exactly when he would get to the apartment. We lit birthday candles on the cheesecake, placed it on the dining room table and hid on the patio. All perfectly executed.
And that's pretty much it. The food turned out good. The lasagna turned out great. The cheesecake worked. (And I already have thoughts for improving the recipe.) We all turned in at about 2am. We'll grill some hamburgers on the patio grill for lunch later today and that'll be it.
Now that all this is done, it's time to really hustle my ass with work.
